While he might not be a welcome sight in a lot of government offices in the St. Louis region, the St. Louis chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is happy to welcome Elliott Davis to its next luncheon meeting.
Davis is the investigative reporter for FOX 2’s “You Paid For It” series. For anyone who hasn’t seen him in action, his style is to track down (some might say ambush) public officials to ask them about questionable spending.
He claims as results of his investigations:
*Helping get the Missouri governor and legislature to overhaul the vehicle emissions testing program.
*Leading the Missouri Department of Education to dissolve the Wellston School District in St. Louis County and terminate the school board and superintendent.
*Prompting the Illinois education department to dissolve the Venice School District and fire the school board.
*A massive St. Louis city government plan to tear down unsafe buildings.
Davis’ work was recognized in 2002 with an Emmy Award for best investigative report. He has also won St. Louis Black Journalism awards for best television series in 2001, 2002 and 2003. He is a past winner of the Illinois Broadcaster’s Award and is a past recipient of the National Black Journalist award for best television series.
Davis will discuss and take questions about his reports at the SPJ meeting at noon Thursday, Feb. 11, at Lucas Park Grille, 1234 Washington Avenue in St. Louis. The cost is $10, which includes drink and tip.
