SPJ discusses social media with local experts

Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and Storify. How can today’s journalists keep track of all these ever-evolving social media options and turn them into useful reporting tools?

The St. Louis Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will feature local social media whizzes at its next luncheon meeting for a discussion on how to keep up with the latest the Web has to offer.

Among the speakers are two of our own brilliant Post-Dispatch minds:

Erica Smith, social media editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and STLtoday.com, and the person behind the Weatherbird’s posts and tweets.

Gabe Hartwig, creative director for Go! magazine and dedicated Tweeter and Facebook poster.

Also with us will be Michael Calhoun, a reporter at KMOX radio station in St. Louis who spreads his reports across Twitter and Facebook.

The meeting will be at noon Thursday at our new meeting spot: Copia Urban Winery & Market on Washington Avenue, just east of Tucker Boulevard in downtown St. Louis. Lunch, including drink and tip, is $12 for members and $15 for non-members.

We’re already getting a great response to this topic. If you plan to attend (and of course we hope you do), please RSVP to Lisa Eisenhauer by Oct. 12.
