Bloggers & Journalists Win Case Against Apple

Posted in at 3:20 pm by steve

From MacNN:

Bloggers and online journalists have completed their final victory lap in a protracted fight against iPod maker Apple Inc. Earlier this month, a Santa Clara County Court ordered Apple to pay the legal fees associated with the defense of subpoenas issued to online journalists (and other related entities) in response to online reports about a confidential audio/video product — code-named “Asteroid” — under development at the Cupertino-based company. The “Asteroid” product was never released, but Apple claimed the news reports violated California state trade secret law and that the journalists were not entitled to First Amendment protections. However, following an appeals decision last year that strongly sided with the journalists, the Court ordered Apple to pay all legal costs associated with the defense, including a 2.2 times multiplier of the actual fees.

When: Tuesday, January 23, 11:30am
Fuzz and Wuz

The early 20th Century cop reporters’ terms for their work were: the Fuzz for the police and the Wuz for the dead. There’s a lot more to it in the 21st Century world of live broadcasts, news Web sites, social consciousness and crime statistics.

With more and more restrictions being imposed on the press’ Amendment-protected rights to cover events and the news, it’s important to know what to do when confronted by a member of law enforcement who restricts access. We look at how the pieces come together — and sometimes don’t.

Benefit from the combined experience of journalists with nearly 60 yrs. of dealing with the police as well as advice from top law enforcers themselves at this month’s luncheon meeting. Moderated by veteran crime-beat journalist Pat Gauen, Public Safety editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, this panel of experts will also include Ed Rich, manager of the assignment desk at KSDK; Heather Ratcliffe, police reporter, St. Louis Post-Dispatch; Richard Wilkes, director of communications, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department;
Sgt. Sam Dotson, aide to Chief Joe Mokwa, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department; Lt. Steve Lewis, public information officer, Chesterfield Police; Corporal Jeff Meyer, public information officer, Town and Country Police.

Cost is $15, cash or check only (payable to SPJ–St. Lous chapter), and covers the speakers, your lunch and beverage. Ample parking is available either at meters on the street or in the parking lot behind Maggie O’s.

And if you haven’t joined SPJ yet, this is the perfect time to become a member. In a few months, we will be offering different rates for members and non-members.
